NYC Pauses Generative AI for Younger Students
New York City announced a one-year moratorium on student use of generative AI from pre-K through eighth grade for the 2026–27 school year, a policy that will affect nearly 600,000 students which is roughly two-thirds of the district. Mayor Mamdani framed it as embracing new technology "only when it serves our students"; high schoolers will instead receive twice-yearly lessons on AI literacy, bias, and ethics, and teachers may still use AI for lesson planning and administrative work.
